Certificate for Landscape Design

Certificate for Landscape Design is a 16-week course ( 2 x 8-week terms) that gives you the skills to design small to medium gardens confidently.  After 16 weeks, you will be able to sketch a plan, use a computer-aided design to develop plans, have a basic understanding of soils, planting, irrigation, lighting, and landscape construction technology.

The 16 weeks are broken into 8 sections and require a time commitment of 2-4 hours a week. 2 hours will be attending a video lecture with a landscape designer, 30 minutes to discuss any questions. You are expected to spend another 1-2 hours a week with self-guided learning and practice.

COURSE OUTLINE:

1. Introduction to Landscape Design (Week 1)
Understand the origins and background of landscape design including the history, influences and contemporary influences on landscape design.

2. Understanding the Land (Weeks 2-3)
You will learn the basic knowledge of soils, water, ecology, climate and how you can harness this knowledge to create better designs for your city and region.

3. Landscape Design Principles (Weeks 4-5)
When designing gardens there are many design principles that you need to understand including scale, orientation, light & dark, negative and positive, uses and defining space.

4. Landscape Graphics (Weeks 6-8)
You will learn about basic drawing tools and the basic skills to start to develop sketch ideas, plans and sections. (not included is perspectives or color graphics).
You will be given a weekly exercise to undertake on your own time and you can discuss with the tutor during your 30 mins each week.

BREAK – 2 weeks – you will be given some graphics exercises to develop your drawing skills.

5. Landscape Graphics (Weeks 8-10)
Continued drafting techniques including drafting standards, notation and symbols.

6. Landscape Materials & Technology (Weeks 11-12)

7. Planting Selection & Design (Week 13-14)

8. Professional Practice  (Week 15-16)
During this section we will teach the basics of landscape

NOTES:  You will learn the basics of landscape design, however, we do not give complete graphics lessons. Students should develop their own drafting style after the course has finished.
