Introduction to Landscape Design is a 12 week online course that gives you the basic skills to design your own gardens and small landscapes. By the end of this course you should be able to design small gardens and explore the possibilities of landscape design.
1. Background and History of Landscape Design (Weeks 1 )
– understand the basic history of landscape and garden design
– understand the culture of landscape design
– understand the modern profession
2. Design Styles and Influence (Week 2)
– understand the differences between various styles of landscape design and the pros and cons of each style.
3. Site Analysis (Week 3 & 4)
– understand the basics of reviewing, measuring and analysing a site
– learn about how to spot site issues that can shape design
– learn how to measure a site efficiently and create a basic site plan
4. Basic Design Principles (Weeks 5 to 7)
– learn about scale, views, space, uses and more
– learn how to best optimise the space available for resident’s needs
– understand the impact of neighboring gardens (positive & negative) on your design
5. Basic Plan Skills (Weeks 8 & 9)
– learn about the tools of drawing
– learn to sketch a plan quickly for idea brainstorming
– understand how to use lines and symbols in a concept plan
6. Material Selection (Week 10)
– understand various materials – paving, walls, furniture, structures, etc.
– learn about practical use and installation method
7. Plant Selection (Week 11)
– learn about plants – groundcovers, shrubs, trees, climbers and more
– understand basic planting design principles
8. Other Elements and Engaging a contractor (Week 12)
– learn about basic lighting, irrigation,
– learn how to engage a contractor
Introduction to Landscape Design is a basic introduction to landscape design, it will prepare you to understand what the basic elements of landscape design, however we suggest if you wish to become a landscape designer you should enrol in our Certificate in Landscape Design.
